Community Peace Event: Back to School (August 2018):
“We marched to because we are tired of the violence in our communities, we want resources and help to prevent more youth to stay out of gangs and violence.”

YLC members partnered with Bessemer Park to hold a Back-to-School/ Peace Event.
Youth led an anti-violence march & rally, facilitated games and sports, held a fundraiser, recruited new members, gave out school supplies, and presented their community mural. Approx. 40 participants in the march. 400 attendees at event.
Goals, identified by YLC members, were to: raise awareness of violence, racism, and police brutality; bring the community together; empower youth; and have fun.
Youth took on leadership roles:
- During YLC meetings, youth prepared YLC agendas, led welcome & intro., facilitated discussions, & practiced timekeeping.
- Students developed committees to plan activities during Back-to-School event
- Students decided the rally’s agenda & how they were getting turnout for the event.
- 11 students had speaking roles during Back-to-School event
- Everyone participated in the event itself.

Community Peace Event: Back to School/ (August 2017):
YLC members partnered with Bessemer Park and the South Chicago Chamber to hold a Back-to-School/ Peace Event. Over 300 people attended
Goals, identified by YLC leaders: Create a safe space, build community, have fun, and recruit new members.
Youth leaders planned and ran games for the festival to bring the community together. Games included: sack races, egg and spoon race, balloon toss, tug of war, dance contest, and a basketball shooting contest. Leaders broke down the Wall of Hate, where people wrote down experiences they wanted to let go.

Community Peace Event: Southeast Side Day Without Hate (April 2016):

Community Peace Event: Southeast Side Day Without Hate (April 2015):
A march against violence and bullying in our neighborhood!
“I lost my cousin to violence…. He didn’t even get a chance to experience his life all the way and you can’t bring someone back to life after violence has come around. [We] stand together, united to… stop the violence for good for the next generation and the next generation to come.”
