The Coalition for a South Works CBA wants the development of the U.S. Steel “South Works” Site (formerly known as “Lakeside Development”) to be successful. We define “success” as a development that:

  • Employs a large number of local residents throughout the development process,
  • Offers training to residents and partnerships with schools to ensure local residents qualify for jobs offered at the development including pre- and post- construction,
  • Provides affordable housing that is available to current residents,
  • Offers tax relief to long-term residents to avoid displacement and gentrification, and
  • Is environmentally sustainable and healthy for the existing community as well as the community within the development,
  • Establishes a robust technology infrastructure for the existing communities, as well as the development.

About our process: ASE and Coalition for a South Works CBA leaders held community listening sessions to surface ideas and priorities community residents have for the South Works site. Resident committees were formed around common priorities (e.g. jobs & workforce development, small businesses, housing, education, environment, infrastructure, quality of life) from those attending the listening sessions and current resident leaders. Resident committees review the priorities surfaced at the listening sessions, best practices that have been won, and then write the CBA.

Please support our efforts to get a CBA that will benefit our community by providing your feedback below.

Good Neighbor Policy- Priorities for SE Side Developments

There are a number of developments planned for the Southeast Side (with over 17 in the last 6 years).

Coalition for a South Works CBA released the results of community visioning sessions, as the Good Neighbor Policy for developers. Throughout 2018-2019, the Coalition for a South Works CBA, held Community Visioning Sessions to hear from residents on the southeast side, what a good neighbor policy for developers should be- what good development should look like in our communities. Residents have prioritized jobs and training, supporting local businesses/entrepreneurship, housing, environment, education, and quality of life, with an emphasis on a community voice, transparency, and accountability.

Community residents voted on key priorities for jobs/training, local businesses, housing, and environment. A list of these priorities can be found here: Good Neighbor Policy Recommendations/Priorities 2020

The full results of the Community Visioning Sessions can be found here: SE Side Visioning Results- Good Neighbor Policy for Development 05-2020
