Community Eyes Movement in Naming a New Developer for South Works Site

Chicago– After more than two decades of sitting vacant, the former U.S. Steel South Works site finally has a new developer. Barcelona Housing Systems has been named as the new developer for the South Works.

“The Coalition is happy that a decision has been made regarding the developer of the South Works site.  We look forward to meeting with Barcelona Housing Systems and collaborating with them on the success of the development.” –Amalia NietoGomez, coordinator of the Coalition for a Lakeside CBA and Executive Director of the Alliance of the SouthEast (ASE).

“We’re looking forward to working with our local public officials and the site developer in establishing a transparent, win-win relationship to benefit the current community residents, congregations, and businesses.” –Anne Holcomb, South Shore community activist.

Thank you, everyone, who came to the town hall meeting on Sept. 25 and supported of our efforts to get a Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) to ensure jobs, training, education, and affordable housing opportunities as well as environmental protections, the creation of a transportation plan, and tax relief for long-time residents.
